Caga Tió

En Cataluña, los niños no reciben la Navidad de Papá Noel, sino de... un tronco. Se llama tronco de Navidad (conocido en catalán como Caga Tió).

La diversión empieza el 8 de diciembre, día de la Inmaculada Concepción. Ese día, el tronco se guarda en casa. No se queda ahí, sino que se cuida. Los niños lo cubren con una mantita para que no se congele y casi todas las noches le dan de comer algo rico: cortezas de pan, cáscaras de fruta o frutos secos. La idea es que el tronco crezca y acumule regalos.

Y el clímax llega la noche del 24 de diciembre, Nochebuena. Los adultos fingen salir de la habitación; se representa su papel. Los niños agarran los palos preparados, empiezan a golpear el tronco escondido bajo la manta con todas sus fuerzas y cantan una canción-petición severa pero alegre (traducción de una de las versiones):

"¡Tronco, caga!
¡Caga arenque (¡y turrón!) para que esté salado!
¡Caga bien, danos dulces ricos!
No cagues arenque, está demasiado salado.
¡Caga turrón, bueno y sabroso!
¡Si no te haces rico, te mataré a martillazos!
¡Si no cagas hasta saciarte, te daré un palo!"

La canción termina. Los palos se apartan. Se acerca el momento más crucial. Los niños levantan la manta... y ven que el tronco, satisfecho/intimidado, "ha cumplido la petición". Debajo se encuentran pequeños regalos: tradicionalmente son tesoros comestibles (¡y no tan comestibles!): frutos secos de todo tipo, pasas, orejones, galletas de almendras, halva (turrón), mazapán, monedas de chocolate y, a veces, incluso pequeños juguetes o recuerdos.
